Course Description:
A fascinating world opens with this study of the derivation, history, and interplay of many words which we use is our Masonic Ritual. A relatively new Mason looks at this topic from a perspective untainted by years of bad information and fueled by a fascination with our often archaic but evocative wordings.
This course will expand the participants' awareness of the rich meanings and nuances of the words we use in our Masonic ritual and how these meanings have grown and varied over the centuries. Sources for such a study of word derivations and meanings will be introduced along with basic cautions and methods which should be employed in the study of our Masonic language.
Emphasis will be placed upon the importance words have in understanding and delivering our ritual. The need and fun of ongoing study will also be stressed.
Students will be encouraged to ask questions and discuss words and phrases of particular interest to them.
Finally the aim of the experience will be a combination of creating an awareness and a more lively interest in the language we as Masons use and the establishing of a foundation for an ongoing critical study.
Course Instructor:
Kelley Carter & a team of seasoned Masons. Bro. Carter, a Regent for the Maine Masonic College, volunteered for this course because he - as a new Mason - had a lot of questions about our Masonic ritual. When this course was first presented in March, it was met with exceptional reviews. You won't be disappointed!
MMC Course: ELM 05
