Masonic Mentoring
Letter To Masonic Educators & Interested Brethren
The Maine Masonic College will be presenting a course entitled Masonic Background for Mentors on February 20, 2010 at the Bangor Masonic Center from 9:00 to 12:00 AM. Although the course uses a comparatively new term, Mentors, the term Elder Brother, Education Coordinator, Masonic educator, new Master Mason, or any Master Mason interested in adding to their knowledge could also be substituted.
This course is a part of the continuing goal of the College to provide more light in Masonry. The course will be presented by Brother Richard Bowden with the assistance of Brothers Eric Kuntz and Walter Macdougall as well as participation by all attendees.
We will be exploring the symbols of the degree journey by defining some of the spiritual messages contained within the individual degrees. The day will begin with a review of how our brains absorb symbols and how they affect our outlooks and retention of relevant information. From there we will be treated to a short discussion of philosophical aspects of Freemasonry, and then move to the context of each degree in order as we all participate in reviewing pertinent portions of our beloved ritual.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their ciphers with them, as there may be some portions of the discussions that will need to be resolved by individual cipher pages.
Brethren: We are putting our candidates through the degrees, asking them to rote memorize the lesson booklets to prove proficiency for the next degree, then do it all again for the climax of the third degree, then forget them as no longer being relevant to the process. We then wonder why they do not return and after a sometimes very short time, we lose them for non-payment of dues.
We can do better by providing every Mason with more light by helping them decipher the deep moral and spiritual foundations contained within the mystique of the degrees.
It would be helpful for our planning if you preregister for this course with our Registrar, Brother Jerry Leighton at 296-2085. However, if your plans change at the last minute and you were unable to preregister, please join us anyway. Please be prepared to display your dues card if necessary that we may ensure that all present are Master Masons.
We are looking forward to you joining us in this adventure. Your inputs and philosophies are important to our overall success.
Brother Richard L. Bowden , Instructor
